Fire Safety Training
Fire safety in the design and management of healthcare premises

I would like to introduce a five-day fire safety training course in the design and management of healthcare premises. This is a recognised course by the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and The National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers (NAHFO)

The course is designed to meet the training needs of local authority fire service inspecting officers, architects, building control officers or any other colleagues responsible for fire safety within a healthcare environment. It relates to the understanding and application of the relevant Firecode suite of documents (Health Technical Memorandum - HTM).

The HTM documents are the benchmark standard for the design and management of healthcare premises and provide best practice standards and policies that enable the successful management of fire safety.

On successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to interpret and use the HTM documents as they relate to fire safety design and management within healthcare premises. Understanding these documents will allow delegates to consult and give advice on new healthcare buildings and on major alterations to existing healthcare buildings.

The HTM documents can also be used as the benchmark standard for fire risk assessments.

The subjects covered are:

  • HTM 05-01: Managing healthcare fire safety

  • HTM 05-02: Guidance in support of functional provisions for healthcare premises.

  • HTM 05-03: Operational provisions manuals:

Part A            General Fire Safety (a very general                                         overview)

Part B            Fire Detection and Alarm Systems

Part D            Commercial Enterprises on Healthcare                                 Premises

Part E             Escape lifts in Healthcare Premises

Part M            Guidance on the Fire Safety of Atria in                                    Healthcare Premises

The course has both individual and syndicate exercises to reinforce learning with a summative assessment taken by delegates on the Friday morning. Successful delegates will be awarded a certificate of this nationally recognised course.

The course is designed to be run with a maximum of 12 delegates (to ensure the best learning experience for delegates), ideally with a mix of fire officers and healthcare professionals.

Previously run in Plymouth and Ipswich, the course has a proven track record with excellent reviews:

“very experienced, friendly and delivered the course well” Fire Safety Officer, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service

“the tutor was knowledgeable in the subject matter. Excellent teaching style and able to adapt to individual needs” Fire Safety Advisor, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust

The course can be run as an “outreach” course at premises of your choice, or for lower numbers, it can be run at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Devon where I have a partnership arrangement with Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
